What Is Platelet-rich Plasma – PRP?

Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets.) The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries.

PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

To develop a PRP preparation, blood must first be drawn from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood.

Laboratory studies have shown that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP can speed up the healing process.?

Most successful protocols require 3 x PRP treatment every 2 weeks, to help different layers of muscle, tendon and cartilage heal as well as optimal tissue proliferation.

Most patient already feel the effect within 14 days after the 1st PRP treatment. Many times we do a second PRP treatment 14 days later to enhance the effect and complete the treatment.

The PRP is prepared by blood extraction from a vein in the arm like during normal blood collection. The blood collection (20ml) is centrifuged for a set amount of time. Then the PRP is extracted from the tube and administered to the area of injury under ultrasound guidance.

We are using ultrasound guidance to locate the area of injury and administer the PRP ( 2-4ml) to the area. Sometimes we do use local anaesthetic to numb the injected area.

We advise patient not to take any anti-inflammatories 2 days before the PRP treatment. Please alert your doctor if you are on anti-coagulant (Warfarin) therapy. Also inform your doctor if you recently had cortisone or steroid injections

In stem cell therapy, the doctor will extract fat tissue or bone marrow from your body to harvest stem cells to inject into your injured area. You need to be sedated to undergo stem cell collection from your body.

For PRP therapy we use a normal 10-20ml blood sample from your veins. You will not be sedated during the PRP therapy.
